What Got You Interested in Avant-Garde?
In the 60s, there was a kind of crossover between what the post-war avant-garde were doing and broadly popular rock acts. For example, The Beatles on the White Album famously included a track called Revolution 9 which is a sound collage. They did that because John Lennon and Paul McCartney were interested in Stalkow's and things like this. That's an extraordinary cultural moment. And The Beatles were far from the only ones to do that. So as I was listening to these things when I was 12 or 13 years old, my attention was instinctively drawn to the more unusual elements of those records.
