The social, emotional learning movement cobbled itself into really cannibalized from within the already decidedly leftist program from James Comer. Some of the findings were told, were that students learn by how emotionally connected they were to the material and that strong relationships and support in the classroom can help them perform better. There is some of that in the Comer whole child education stuff, but there's also lots of tendrils and deferary there. The real education is a political education, and the way you get people engaged in wanting to learn the political context of their lives is to show it to them and radicalize them through it.
