I've heard that old school pick you attendings will end up giving like a bear hug to the child or really decompressing the chest manually. I would love to meet somebody who's done it and show me how it helps. dexmetatamidine intravenously is now commonly used at many centers in order to help them just give them a moderate level of sedation. It doesn't really affect your respiratory drive, which is why it is chosen amongst other medications such as benzodiazepines and opioids.
