The phenomenon of copycat suicides has become known as the Wuther effect. In 1774, Johann Wolfgang von Golt published a book called The Sorrows of Young Wuther. There were reports of young men dressing in yellow pants and blue jackets like Wuther and shooting themselves. This resulted in the book being banned in several places.
