The master slave dialectic was something that he borrowed from Rousseau. It carries a very simple idea that the master lives in the master's world. So only those who have the awakened slave consciousness can drive the dialectic, the double consciousness. He believed that the master and the slave constituted a dialectical pair that had to work out.
