Crusading in the Baltic Region
crusading as an ideal allowed a kind of escape valve where people take up the cross, and they coulda use their skills. A still, there was this psychological tension between the warrior impulses and the pacifist impulses within european society. So crusading becomes, in this way, a sort of mental and political and economic fixture of high mediaeval life.
