The death of Pericles marked the end of an exceptional period of leadership in Athenian history. This political vacuum would bring about a major change in the character of the Athenian government. These men didn't hail from traditional landed aristocratic families, but families of ordinary working Athenians. They aimed to strengthen Athens' offensive capability and thereby win the war decisively.
