The Beginning of Music

Art is exactly something that makes you want to pay attention. Not for the sake of ulterior or extrinsic ends but for its own sake. Paying attention to elevator music would be maddening. It's not meant to be aesthetic but anesthetic. Cell phone ring tools, doorbells and alarm clocks in turn may use this maddening effect precisely to get your attention simply because you want to make it stop. In all of these ways they are first order tools, not music in the sense of art.
