Brahms' Trio Section
The music without warning takes on a completely new character. Brahms moves us into the middle section of the intermezzo, usually called a trio section. This is elegant and stately music full of singing and a sense of good cheer. But to get back home to that beautiful clarinet melody, Brahms will do something that we need to keep in mind for the last movement. Listen to the way Brahms emphatically brings us back to the main theme, using pizzicato or plucked strings. Now remember that moment. For now, he leaves us to enjoy a brief reminiscence of the trio section before we seem to drift off to sleep.
