In order to grow in erotic love we need an understanding for what these feelings are really about, where this longing is directed. If the longing is just left to itself cut off from perceptions about its deeper goals, then we are left in a world in which everything can just be consumed only half-policed by moral guidelines that are ignorant as to what they're trying to direct. Now Dante should have something to say about this question. He is the author of one of the richest and greatest explorations in Western Christianity of erotic love.
