If they have a preconceived notion about how you'll respond or react to things, and you choose to react different than what they think you'll do, you might start changing their trajectory. You will surprise them. And this might go both ways. If you normally react in a kind and supportive way, and they don't change, it might be time to act in a highly disciplined way and ground them.
