I met John Berger to interview him for Marxism today and it was the beginning of a lifelong friendship. I got this really lovely job at a publisher where you would go in two days a week to be a reader so that's when life acquired a good balance between having free time and financial security. From then on I felt able to embark on a life of properly independent writing yeah. You published your first book in 1986 which was Ways of Telling about John Berger and you've said that you you regretted the way that you'd written it almost immediately after it was published.
