He had a similar experience I think to what Socrates describes as going around searching for wisdom and he finds, actually nobody knows much of anything. He felt like he did that and that it was a wasteland that he really had to shed all this stuff that had been passed down to him and use his own brain to build it up from scratch. That's what we're seeing here.
