After the triumph of operation desert shield, it became an article of faith that america's military power was so overwhelming. It seemed obvious to re purpose them to deal with these rogue states and non state threats to global order. The september eleventh attack seemed to confirm all this and also posed a test. If America could not crush this opposition, it could not rule the world. Fortunately, it seemed this was just the kind of job that the us Military was primed for in the post col bor era. What could possibly go wrong?
