The Grove in Boston, Massachusetts

On November 28, 1942, a fire broke out at the Grove nightclub in Boston. The club was owned by Solomon Wollanski who wanted it to be more glamorous. About 1000 people were there that night - twice the planned number. There were no emergency lights and many of the doors were locked. Two-and-a-half minutes after the flames started, 49 people died.
