Connecting With Your Child After School
The third takeaway is downtime, which I feel like so many of us can relate to. Dopamine is the reward center of the brain and that's what's firing when we're watching a screen. For some kids, especially kids who are neurodivergent, they have low dopamine stores. Then they might need some dopamine in order to access the serotonin or oxytocin. We'll get some serotonin in movement activities. You'll get some in downtime activities. Really reducing stimuli is the goal of downtime. 10 minutes is our goal. And if this play involves child led play, where they get to tell you what to do.
