The Dangers of Games

Playing chess during graduate school helped you more than just reading analytic philosophy on its own terms. I mean, really like the mindset that you need to function as an analytic philosopher is to look for precisely what very careful attacks someone might make and pre-prepare for all those attacks and look ahead. That's not a mindset I naturally had, but I learned from chess. And so in so far as that loss comes from having failed to look ahead, it amplifies that particular form of failure. It can be a really useful learning tool.
