The Importance of Christianity in the Early Kingdoms

We're starting to see these things we really sort of being able to trace developments with the introduction of christianity and the written word. We start seeing these larger kingdoms emerge often sometimes as kind of loose confederacies or kings created by overlord chip. There's a real potential for christianity to act as an ideological underpinning for the social order for kings being good christian monarchs who are appointed by god but it also involves this element of ideological justification for the powers that be. This is where the archaeologist steve basset famously spoke in one context of the f.a. cup model of anglo-sax and kingship.
