The Knights Templar: A Monastic Order
The Knights of the Temple were basically a monastic order, so these are people that had taken vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience to be able to work for spiritual purposes. The Templars developed as an order within the Catholic Church, but they were always considered as something that needed to be observed by the Catholic Church because they were extremely dedicated to their own goals. One part of that is that they were creating a new economic system. They became really the first international bankers. And so you could deposit money, gold, whatever, with the Knights Templar in one city, and then you get a note, and you can then get it out in another city in Europe.
