Lisa Barrett is the author of How Emotions Are Made, the New Science of the Mind and Brain. In her book, Dr. Barrett examines the evidence against the classical theory of emotions. She says that our brain constructs our emotional experiences using the same circuits and functions it uses to construct everything else we experience. We did not inherit universal emotions from non-human ancestors, but we did inherit the ability to form concepts or categories.
