In general, one unit transfusion should raise the hemoglobin by about one. Red blood cells are stored for 42 days; if you irradiate red blood cells, their shelf life drops to 28 days. Platelet antigens are implicated in the cause of neonatal thrombocytopenia as well as post transfusion perperat.
