The Communist China of the 1950s
Guo Chi is an expert on China's approach to sport. He says succeeding in sports and being physically fit was part of a long-term project to overturn China's image as a humiliated, sick country. Some Chinese actually openly acknowledged China was sick men of Asia - so that means the country was sick, the Chinese people were sick, their body was sick. To win the championship, that's a big, big step forward. So that means the Chinese can say they are confident enough to compete with the best on equal footing. Of course, it is not an unfamiliar ruse for leaders to seek to bolster their legitimacy by winning sports on the international stage.
