I think where people get upset with these adaptations is when there's like fundamental departures from what seemingly makes it what it is. If certain bedrock principles are treated like they don't matter, then you're in trouble with at least the people who are loyal to the source material. The thing will only succeed to the degree that it asserts its own identity. It's also maybe harder for performances when everybody's wearing a mask in terms of harder.
