The Future of the Permafrost Region
There's vastly more carbon dioxide and methane locked up in the permafrost than there is in the atmosphere or on land. The projections are that within a few decades, the emissions from the thawing permafrost will exceed the accumulation of carbon dioxide into trees and other vegetation. In higher emission trajectories, thepermafrost region might even reach emission rates of what the United States or China have today.
