Simon Knowles on pushing AI computing to the limit by rethinking chips

The Robot Brains Podcast

CHAPTER

Is There Still a Gap Between Human Brain and Current Chips?

Average human brain uses about 20 wats. That's a very low power budget compared to even the world's best chips. The fibres here, the axons in your m i think more understandable. They do carry electrons. It's a charge signalling system, just like semi conductors in silica. And we understand far less well though, is the computational functions going on in the nuron cells themselves. Something different may emerge that augments silica and electronic that allows us to get closer to a brain. But silican will never get to the power efficiency of a brain for fundamental reasons. He also has one other rather massive problem to day - you got about 200 trillion sinapes
