The Effects of Second Jobs on MPs
The effects are concentrated among conservative MPs, you know, in leading company positions and working in certain industries. But I didn't find any discernible effect for second jobs for most other MPs. So it doesn't have an effect on people working in jobs that aren't direct-to-ships or board memberships. The probability of a bill passing goes up by 0.2 percentage points when Conservative MPs work in the private sector. It amounts to about one changed vote every two years. That's just not enough,. given the vote margins that we typically have in the House of Commons, it's just notEnough to change any votes."
