The Puritans' View of Nature

By 1800, Beaver, Turkey, Bear, Wolf and Deer had vanished from the colonized areas. As for the game animals of the area, they also faced near extinction at the hands of the colonists. Martin's writing seemed to suggest that his spiritual and ecological outlook was much more in line with pre-Christian pagan forms of spirituality than it was with the Puritans' lush Christian outlook. He left many passages in his writings where he makes references to pagan gods and nature spirits. For Martin, while nature had a beauty and purpose of its own.
