The Role of Local Leaders in Political Transitions in the 1990s
Ambon and Maluku Tongara are both ethnically and religiously diverse. They have similar levels of economic development, even though Ambon has higher levels of GDP per capita. Despite these similarities, there's one very key difference between separating these two administrative units. In Ambon, local leaders have been reported to be directly involved in framing and also in mobilizing violence. But in Maluku tongara, local leaders are more seen to work very hard to quell violence by relying on local ethnic networks or other traditions.
