The book is fundamentally about just that issue, liberal education. The idea there was what kind of education is appropriate for a free individual in the context of Athenian democracy as a citizen. They made laws, they sat on juries, they made foreign policy. Every aspect of Athenian city life was determined democratically by debate and deliberation. That's what liberal education is.
