The Roman Concept of Religion
Vessel virgins was the foundational cult of Rome that was very much a mainstream normal cult. Not everyone had to be a part of the cult of Mithras or of the other initiatory mystery religions but what happens is that you you join one of these mystery religions and it doesn't mean that you stop being a part in the main cult of the state. There's no contradiction it's not one or the other like we think of religions but then one mystery cult came along that was exclusive and that was Christianity and it was a Roman mystery cult.
