In 1982, an operator was burned and two workers exposed to gases during an MIC leak. In 1983 and 1984, there were numerous additional leaks of MIC, chlorine gas, phosphine gas, and other deadly poisons. After the leak in 1982, one of the trade unions printed 6,000 posters and put them up all around the city of Bo Paul,. One union leader went on a hunger strike at the entrance of the factory. The plant staff regarded the plant as one of the safest ships in the modern industrial fleet.
