The Photoelectric Effect
The photoelectric effect is a phenomenon that occurs when light hits certain materials. Selenium, for example, can be used to detect changes in light using tiny sensors. In theory, this could lead to the creation of a digital camera with selenium-sensored plates. Unfortunately, we don't know if there was such an image sensor back in the 1880s or something.
