Prince's I Feel for You

Petty was in self-imposed exile, attempting to record a high-concept album. Shaka Khan's reinvention of Prince's I Feel For You became a number three pop, number one R&B smash. By the following spring of 1986, he even blockaded the top two slots on the Hot 100 with singles into completely different styles. If Prince at this point was spinning off a small army of protégés, Tom Petty was meeting and inspiring his elders.
