The History of Self-Help
Self-help could be read historically as coming from the left, says Julian Zelizer. It comes out of kind of radical liberalism, Samuel Smiles, Chartist said. They're basically becoming a form of spirituality, whether it is overtly acknowledged or not. And I think it's so telling that so many contemporary movements appear to have something like a religious format.
