400 slaves, unconnected to this murder, whose only crime was being owned by secundus and living in the same household. The senators got their way and the law was applied, but not immediately. There was a massive outcry from the population of rome. I take this as a kind of a useful reminder of the basic porousness of a sort of extremely subordinated labor within the context of the roman city.
