The Untouchables

In 1720, tattooing replaced amputation as a form of punishment. Crimes like stealing and fraud would be punished with a specific tattoo. The tattoos ultimately created a new class of citizens referred to as the untouchables. In 1870s, tattoos were actually banned for a period of time. But they still had a bad rep over there when I visited Japan.
