Philosophize This!

CHAPTER

The Repressive Hypothesis

In his final work, Foucot calls into question dominant narratives around the topic of human sexuality. The main argument is that all throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, people's thoughts and behaviors surrounding the topic of sexuality have been repressed by people in power. He compares these back room meetings with our doctors or psychologists to a modern day confessional booth. In the same way people were asked to atone for their sins by privately talking about their sex ality to a priest in creepy booths, do we ask people in our modern day to give that information to a doctor whose job it is to tell them whether they are normal or abnormal?
