Nietzsche thought nihilism was a phenomenon of enormous cultural importance that had come marked the development of Western civilization at a certain crucial point. He's generally guided as somebody almost entirely destructive. For him Christianity was life denying. It valued asceticism, denial of the self, over letting the self run free. And he thinks science and the Enlightenment desire to know everything is in a strange way, life denying.
