The History of the Meiji Restoration
Japan annexed the Ryukyu island chain in 1872. They demanded compensation for 54 people killed on Taiwan in December 1871. The Japanese foreign minister went to Beijing to protest he even got to meet the Tonshire emperor but his protestations were denied. China protested but ultimately by March 1879 using foreign arbitration the RyukyU chain officially went to Japan.
