The Origins of Language
We don't really know when language began at the level of human language today. Some estimates go up to a million years ago in some form, probably not obviously identical to now. But that doesn't mean you couldn't have language. It just means you didn't have the same language we have now. And I think more and more evidence points to them having some sort of communicative ability. The reason why we would think language would originate is obviously being able to communicate over distance would be useful for anybody - especially when your survival depends on it as it did back then.
