The blood of others is very much a product of beauvoirs wartime experience. The epigraph to the novel, the little pithy phrase that opens it, is taken from dostoyevsky's brothers karamazov. And really, it's a whole novel about the ethics of responsibility and the ethics of action. That is to say, the parameters of our individual freedom and our collective freedom.
