The Limits of Sentience
I think it's an important question of whether these chatbots are sentient, but I actually think there's a limit to how useful it is because AI can do a lot of harm and a lot of good even if it's not sentient. There was a engineer at Google named Blake Lemoine who was playing around with their large language model, Lambda,. He came to the conclusion that it was sentient and that it deserved rights and legal representation. So why doesn't this thing deserve personhood and the rights that come with it? I think we will see an AI rights movement in this country within the next 10 years.
