The Society of Refusal

The work of trash collection in Dakar is often framed through a sort of Islamic moral framework. I was surprised to find how much worker the municipal trash workers were describing their labor in terms of its spiritual value. The act of kind of purifying the urban public space as a kind of Islamic environmental police force, some people described it as religious spiritual experience. That encouraged themkind of kept them going against all odds, even though these were really tough jobs and they weren't valued very much for them.
