The monkey dance is always or almost always two young men who are roughly the same age and roughly similar in physicality. It typically only occurs when there's some question about who would actually prevail in this physical contest. If these two guys were going to fight, we actually don't know who would win. Monkey dances very seldom rise between like friends in a group in which the sort of the relationships are established.

Rob Henderson is a PhD candidate at the University of Cambridge and a US Air Force Veteran.

Men fight. Sometimes they look silly when they fight. But they also collaborate and team up to take on common enemies. Women fight in very different ways that are less obvious, but no less vicious, and they sometimes try to even scupper their own teammates.
