The Methodological Approach to Pornography

In the 18th century, since no one knew what pornography was going to be, texts didn't only describe sex. Sex would maybe graphically and explicitly and spectacularly come up in a novel. It might be described in ways we'd consider it pornographic. And then you might enter a phase of the text for 100 pages where sex isn't mentioned. So like all these other things are happening in these novels that I study in this book that are adjacent to sex but are not sex acts themselves. This is like warts and all kitchen sink, you know, everything, casting a wide mat, whatever metaphor you want to use.
