He's just an alternate Spider-Man from the comics, but he is a joy to be around. He and Spider-Man were trying to stop the other spider people because everybody's eventually just turning into giant spiders. So I assumed that his girlfriend knew he was Spider-Man in the way that sometimes the girlfriends know that their boyfriend is Spider-Man.
