The great library of alexandria has been described as the ancient world's equivalent of a modern think tank. Poets like calamachus, theocritus and pollonius of rhodes all called the museum home for a period of time. They were even provided stipens by ptolemy the second to produce masterpieces of hellenistic poetry. Ptolemy philadolphus is also credited with inviting a group of 70 jewish scholars to alexandrian so that they could translate the tora into greek.
