The Newfoundland Park at Beaumont Hammel

Just south of the Pal's battalions were the Newfoundlanders. Out of 800 men who attacked, they lost around 710 of them. They were clambering out of their second line to go forward and join the assault when they were mowed down. After the war it was seen as such an important place in the story of Newfoundland,. The wives, the daughters, the children of those veterans who died, purchased that slice of battlefield and left it. You can still go there. It's never been put back on the plow.
