The Limits of Learning by Watching
There's a limit to how much you can learn by just watching, which is the unfortunate truth that going out in the waters by yourself and making some mistakes is inevitable. I think part of it is, there are so many different directing styles and genres. And as a cinematographer, you wind up on smaller productions and even on larger productions with a lot of cinematographers I've had on the show,. They often end up directing like there hits a period of time where it's like, Oh, all right, I'll pick up the slack.
