Svete polyakova was chosen from more than 27 thousand applicants for a job at the shiny new restaurant. George cohan had begun sounding out the soviets about the possibility of opening a moscow branch of the global fast food brand in the late 19 seventies, at the height of the cold war. He made dozens of visits to the former communist nation and eventually signed a preliminary agreement to open its first restaurant in russia. But when reformist leader mikhail gorbachov took over in the kremlin in 19 85, george knew that his time had come.
